About Me:
I am a creative thinker, and through my writing and music, I express my philosophies. Only one of my books has been published, it's a memoir I wrote under contract. The title is Crossing Borders, and on the cover is my client's name: Will Carr. (I do get creds on the cover-page, so I'm happy.) I enjoyed writing that book, but where I'd like to see my name is on the cover of one of my novels. I've written four, but have yet to find a publisher.
It may sound strange that a person keeps writing more books despite ongoing rejections, but that's an indication of the soul of a true writer. We can't not write. That is our primary position - acceptance or accolades are fabulous and they may even be necessary, but they are secondary. It is all about the art.
We do need to make a living, but it is particularly difficult to get published in the 21st century. Everyone has access to writing equipment, and it's as if people are suddenly tumbling to the fact that all lives are interesting. Everybody is writing, these days. Non-fiction is more popular than ever, especially biographies & memoirs & such. Anyone can produce a book. Anyone who's a story-teller, or famous, or rich, or political, a hero, a victim, a criminal, or a dietician. Agents and publishers are ongoingly deluged with submissions, numbering in the thousands each month. Who's to say how difficult it would be for me to publish my novels if the competition wasn't so thick during my lifetime?
I am the one to say. There are aspects of my writing… it isn't that there are great flaws as much as there is a subtle lack of finesse. So, I have embarked on an adventure, and the goal of this quest is to find the source of what I see as a temporary shortcoming in my ability with the craft.
I've launched my adventure by enrolling in an accredited online university. Ellis College through NYIT, it's a great school. Here I am, 45 years old, and I have decided to pursue my first Bachelors degree. It isn't unlikely that I'll continue on to a PhD, which at this rate means I'll be in my fifties when I graduate. Feels perfect. My youth was decidedly not wasted while I was young!
As a musician, I've written dozens of songs, and I sing & accompany myself on guitar & keyboard. What I feel for music runs just about neck-a-neck with my passion for writing - I can't live without it - but for whatever reasons, writing has a tad more priority. Musically, I have performed paid gigs, but talk about a hard industry to break into! It has only been a recent event, in the scope of history, that a career in writing has become available to the general public. The harmonic convergence that is music has always been possible for anyone capable of speech, tone, or tapping out a rhythm. The competition is vast, and besides, what I do musically is 75% internal pleasure.
So, I am predominantly a writer. Backspace, erase, retype: I am a philosopher who expresses through her writing, and also through her music.
